Artist Bio followed by CV for Marie Kazalia

A deep taproot extends from my series of spot paintings (2012-14) and Asemic writing paintings (2005-2013), through my art school years and long before adulthood–encompassing language, colors and lettering of advertisements in my native English language (viewed since childhood in the USA), as well as extending to Asia and language and colour influences from my four expatriate years in the countries of Japan, India and China. In art school, (Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the California College of Arts in the San Francisco bay area, including graduate studies) my paintings were always concerned with flatness. I studied textile design in studio practice, working with spots, repeating patterns, and subverted patterns–explored with a color theory and palette I continue to devise. Flatness and the orb are the focus of my Spot Series paintings begun in 2012 and continuing current series 2014– interests held long before the article on Contemporary Abstraction placed such concerns at the forefront of art.

My paintings contain color and language influences from my 4 expatriate years in the Asian countries of Japan, India and China—primarily in the cities of Tokyo, Madras (now Chennai) and Hong Kong.

As an American, born in Toledo, Ohio, with a Bachelor of Fines Arts degree from the California College of Arts in the San Francisco bay area, I studied Japanese at a private language school in Tokyo where I practiced speaking, reading and writing Japanese kanji, hiragana and katakana characters. Hiragana and katakana the more modern simplified characters most often used on the many large neon signs in the urban centers of Tokyo.

I also traveled, lived and taught in India for one full year, then moved to Hong Kong and enrolled in a Mandarin language course at the Chinese University– studying conversation, reading, and writing Chinese characters. Being able to read hundreds of the most common Chinese characters made it easier for me when I traveled by train through mainland China to Beijing, then down to Shanghai, and  back to Hong Kong, and during my one month stay in Taipei, Taiwan– I was able to read street signs, shop signs and  advertisements in Chinese throughout the PRC & ROC and speak with the Chinese residents. Other Asian countries I visited for shorter periods–Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and South Korea–yet their language forms and color influences reemerge in new abstracted and combined forms. These Asian travel experiences, my travels in the Middle East and Europe, as well as months spent in Mexico re-emerge in color and form in my art in conjunction with the ever-changing (viewed since my childhood) colors and letters of advertisements of my native English language and the fine art I studied from the early age of 7 years old when I began attending  art classes for children at the Toledo Museum of Art, continuing there into my teenage years– each weekend, hours before art class began, my father dropped me at the museum where I wandered alone studying and memorizing the enormous, to me, entire museum layout and many of the art objects and paintings on display.

Washing Lines: A collection of poems selected by Janie Hextall and Barbara McNaught (published 2011, reprint 2015)

….we are delighted to tell you that we have sold sold out of the original edition of Washing Lines and are planning to reissue the book this autumn with the inclusion of some new poems.  We plan a print run of between 1,000 and 2,000 copies and this time only require English language UK rights.    We are therefore hoping that you will give us permission to reuse your poem, That Moment, and will obviously reprint full acknowledgement in the book as before…..while it is obviously good news that we are planning a reissue, the margins are still very tight and we are hoping that you will be able to grant permission on the same basis as last time.

Very best wishes
